Christian Caujolle est critique, directeur artistique et commissaire de nombreuses expositions internationales, ancien professeur associé à l’École nationale supérieure Louis Lumière de Paris. Personnalité incontournable du monde de la photographie contemporaine, il a été responsable de la photographie au sein du quotidien Libération dans les années 1980, a été l’un des fondateurs de l’Agence VU’ en 1986 et le directeur artistique de la galerie VU’ en 1998, et l’auteur des textes de nombreux catalogues et monographies de photographes. Il est également l’auteur de Things as They Are : Photojournalism in Context since 1955, (Chris Boot, 2005), écrit à l’occasion des 50 ans du World Press Photo, livre pour lequel il a obtenu l’ICP Infinity Award en 2006, et de Circonstances particulières (Actes Sud, 2007), qui parle de son rapport intime au médium photographique.
Il participe à la programmation artistique de nombreuses manifestations et festivals de photographie, dont ImageSingulières à Sète (pour lequel il écrit également chaque année les textes de la collection liée au festival et coéditée par Le Bec en l’air). Il dirige au Cambodge le festival Photo Phnom Penh qu’il a créé en 2008 et dans le cadre duquel il a découvert le travail de Philong Sovan. Depuis 2020, il est également conseiller artistique du Château d’Eau à Toulouse. Christian Caujolle is a critic, artistic director and curator of international exhibitions, as well as former associate professor at the École nationale supérieure Louis Lumière in Paris. A key figure in the world of contemporary photography, he was the chief photography editor at the French daily newspaper Libération in the 1980s. He is one of the founders of VU’ Agency in 1986 and became the artistic director of VU’ Gallery in 1998.
He has written numerous essays for catalogues and monographs of photographers. He is also the author of Things as They Are: Photojournalism in Context since 1955 (Chris Boot, 2005), published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of World Press Photo, for which he received the ICP Infinity Award in 2006, and Circonstances particulières (Actes Sud, 2007),in which he looks into his intimate relationship with the photographic medium. He curates several photography events and festivals, including ImageSingulières in Sète (for which he also writes the texts for the collection linked to the festival and co-published by Le Bec en l’air). He is the director of Photo Phnom Penh Festival in Cambodia, which he created in 2008 and during which he discovered the work of Philong Sovan. Since 2020, he is also the artistic advisor of the Château d’Eau in Toulouse.
